A full clear of the Crushbone revamp at level 14, on a Shaman, Shadowknight and Wizard team I freely admit is the wrong combination. The zone gives up a level in 37 minutes, a pile of named orcs that the game never flags as named, and one clicky damage shield that is the only thing here I would actually come back for. My verdict on the zone itself is not kind.

Every Way In

Pick by what you have unlocked.

  • Through Butcherblock Mountains is the overland route.
  • Translocating is free until level 20, then it charges 1 platinum per level, counted off my highest level character rather than the one I am playing.
  • It is charged per hop, and Freeport to Butcherblock is two of them. Freeport to Ocean of Tears, then Ocean of Tears to Butcherblock.
  • That is where the 82 platinum comes from: 41 a hop at a max level of 41. Yours will be cheaper now and dearer later, and half that if you only need one hop.
  • Wizards port into Greater Faydark directly.
  • Druids port to Butcherblock or Steamfont, which one depending on level, and walk the rest.
  • Kelethin sits in the middle of Greater Faydark with Crushbone directly north of it, and Lesser Faydark to the south.

The locals jump you at the zone line. They are around level 10 and not worth stopping for.

Run It at Difficulty 1, Not Zero

The single setting that changes how the zone plays.

  • Mobs stop fleeing at difficulty 1. That is the whole reason I step up from zero, and it is not a separate toggle.
  • At difficulty zero the orcs run at low health, which means carrying snare on a caster that would rather carry a nuke.
  • Respawns on, so a full clear keeps feeding rather than emptying out behind me.
  • I call it out again later in the run as the reason the clear stayed clean, which is as close as I get to a recommendation.

The Named Are Not Flagged as Named

The zone's actual quirk, and the workaround.

  • Plenty of orcs have proper names and no rare tag. Scotsman, Taskmaster, Chokehold, Marobane, Blood Gurgler, the Prophet, Lord Darnis and an orc trainer all turned up without the flag, and I say outright I am surprised they are not marked as rare spawns.
  • Exactly one carried a rare creature tag across the whole clear, which is what makes the rest look like an oversight rather than a design.
  • The achievement window is the workaround. Hunter of Crushbone lists the names the zone expects you to kill, so opening achievements tells you what to look for even though they were never updated for the revamp.
  • It does not track reliably either. I killed the warlord and the trainer and the achievement did not register both.

They are not hard, just unmarked. An orc paladin lay-hands itself mid-fight and one magician needed burning down fast, and that is the extent of the difficulty.

Chokehold Could Not Be Hit

A beta bug, and it did not ship.

  • Melee did nothing to Chokehold in the beta. I had seen it reported before going in, and I confirm it on camera.
  • Magic was the only thing that landed, which would have left a pure melee group unable to kill him at all.
  • I doubted it was intentional rather than presenting it as a mechanic, and I was right.
  • It was fixed for release, so if you are here on live he takes damage normally. Nothing to plan around.

What Actually Drops

One item is the reason to come. The rest is filler.

  • Spiky Splint Mail is the draw. It right-clicks Shield of Fire for a damage shield at 6.8 damage, and I name it the one thing worth having from the zone.
  • Slaver boots at 22 AC I describe as broken for the level, dropping repeatedly, and another rank would put them at 25.
  • Crown of Crush reads 12 AC and 6 strength on the copy I loot, above the 10 and 5 it starts at. About level with the Blackburrow helm, and behind the Shadowknight helm out of Befallen.
  • Bracer of Battle at 7 AC beat the rawhide 5 AC I was wearing and added strength, so it went straight on.
  • The Head Splitter two-hander loses to the Ebon Scythe off the first mob in Befallen, faster delay notwithstanding.
  • A robe at 8 intelligence edges out the shiny metallic robe from Guk.
  • Shoulders and arms are junk. Both dropped with no AC on them at all.

Faction, and the Dwarf You Should Not Kill

Two hours if you want it maxed.

  • Killing orcs raises the wood elf factions, the Faydwer Champions and Emerald Warriors among them, which is the point of grinding here.
  • I start KOS to the elves and am still scowled at by the end of the clear, so this is not a one-session fix.
  • Budget about two hours, which is what Blackburrow took me to reach max ally at a similar pace.
  • A dwarf wandered in and I killed it, and the faction hit on screen was large. Worth not repeating.
  • The quest drops are gated behind that faction. Brass earrings, sealed notes, an orc head and battle plans all dropped, and I left them because the turn-ins are wood elf and high elf side.

The Group, and Why I Would Change It

I am not selling this combination.

  • Shaman is the one I would cut, and take a Bard instead.
  • The whole character existed to unlock ports, not because the build was good, and I say so in the first minute.
  • It is mana starved at 14. Life tap is worth 15, and I spend real time parked in the recovery stance to keep casting.
  • The build does not arrive until the crit AAs do. Once damage and life taps crit together it works, and I have none of that yet.

Hitting 15 Changes It

The spell list is the reason to push through.

  • Life tap goes from 15 to around 100, which is the difference between a nuisance and a sustain tool. One cast later in the run refills me outright.
  • Life Draw, Flame Strike, Flame Shock, Vampiric Embrace and Shielding all come in at once.
  • Pillar of Fire lands for 67, and I flag it as the next AA to buy.
  • Flame Shock crits for 147 almost immediately, against the 190 I was getting from Shock of Lightning before.
  • Empower is not worth the slot. They said they fixed it, and it bought 20 extra points of damage on a 107 nuke.

An AoE build is viable here if you upgrade the rains and pick up the stun AoEs. I am running them unupgraded and say so.

The Verdict

Terrible then, terrible now.

  • The experience is disappointing. Around 0.9 to 1.4 percent a kill at 14, up to 2.8 on a yellow, and I rate it below what a TLP gives you. Eighty percent of a level in 37 minutes is the honest number.
  • It is easy rather than interesting. Splitpaw was harder, and I arrive at 14 and find the zone under-tuned rather than over.
  • Befallen does the same job better. There you are getting named inside the door instead of walking the whole castle to find orcs nobody flagged.
  • I have no nostalgia for it, having skipped it back on retail when it was trains all the way down, and the revamp has not changed my mind.
  • Come for the damage shield clicky, come for the wood elf faction if you need it, and otherwise go somewhere else.

Crushbone at a Glance

  1. Get to Greater Faydark via Butcherblock, a wizard port, a druid port to Butcherblock or Steamfont, or two translocator hops out of Freeport.
  2. Crushbone is directly north of Kelethin.
  3. Instance it at difficulty 1 so nothing flees and you never need snare.
  4. Open the Hunter of Crushbone achievement to find out which orcs are supposed to be named.
  5. Take the Spiky Splint Mail for the Shield of Fire clicky.
  6. Do not kill the dwarves.
  7. Budget two hours if you are here to max the wood elf faction.
  8. Push to 15 before judging the run, where life tap roughly sextuples.

Hello and welcome to EverQuest Legends pre-order beta. Today, we’re going to try out the new revamped Crushbone. We’re outside of it right now. Because like people like to know where some of these things are, right? So this is the greater Faydark zone, right? You can get here through Butcherblock Mountains. It cost me 82 platinum to translocate here from Freeport. So keep that in mind if you’re higher level and you don’t have the porting classes unlocked. Lesser Faydark’s down here. And if you’re a wizard, you’ll teleport in through there. Druids can teleport in through Butcherblock Mountains or Steamfont Mountains depending on your level. And uh the Wood Elf city’s here in the middle and then right north is Crushbone. Now I’m going to be doing to this today on a level 14 Shaman uh Shadow Knight or Wizard, which is not the best. It’s not the best combo. I’m going to I’m going to let you know right now. This is I was leveling this to uh to unlock ports. That’s the only purpose. So we’re going to zone in real quick. You can see here we’re going to get attacked by the locals. They’re level 10 and I don’t care about them. We’re going to get us an instance and go from there. Now at 15 we’re going to get some better spells and this is going to be a little bit better of an experience. Uh but right now it’s a little rough. I’m going to just going to let you know. So we’re going to go here. We’re going to create an instance once we zone in. Uh we’re going to do one because I don’t want the mobs to run. We’re going to do respawning and two like that. Uh now this is a four [snorts] to I believe they said 20 uh 20 something zone, right? So this is uh maybe 22 is what they said. So, we’ll see how this goes uh once we get in here. I have not spent a lot of time in Crushbone, so I don’t really know much about the zone. Uh I think we did a few videos on live about it once or twice, and that’s about it. >> [laughter] >> So, definitely uh it is what it is. All right, so we zone in, we got some level one mobs right here at the door. Right? Let’s kill one of these level mobs one mobs. We get Crushbone orc steam uh Stormguard, which I believe is the uh the guards outside. We’re KOS to them. Faydwer champions, which is the wood elves. And Emerald Warriors, that is the uh wood elves uh I think Stormguard is the the worms. So, so we’re going to get some good faction out of this. Uh so far everything is is is low level. Uh so, definitely four start is probably going to be pretty good for you. Right here’s a blue one. Let’s get that, and we I just nuke these things down. Like that’s how this I have how I play this build. Um there’s a Crushbone thing. I’m not going to deal with those right now, so we’re just going to sell those there. Um just kind of looking around, see if we find named or something. Like there’s a legionnaire. >> [snorts] >> Yeah, it’s not a name, but uh Let’s put this up so you can see my actual damage here. Like this this this build is a very uh mana intensive build, so it gets kind of boring in all honesty. All right, we got a centurion that wanted to attack you in the yellow. I mean, not yellow, he’s white. There we go. All All we got another centurion down. All right, that looks That might be an named. It says Scotsman. I think that’s what it says. Yeah, Scotsman. He is not a named. It’s pretty much just uh it’s just nuke nuke nuke. That’s why it’s a little bit boring. All right, there’s some kind of a bard loot. I don’t know. I’m going to just leave it there cuz I’m not going to do the quest at this point in time, but uh on retail I might might come back here do it. At some point. All right, so those are all lower level lower level. What do we got over here? Lower level. The iron orc. All right, it’s got a small thing here. I Okay, yeah, orc Scotsman. All right, so must be must be something in there. All right, let’s just mark those as auto sell. All right, slaver slaver. Dwarven Elven. All right, so doesn’t look like there’s anything in here named wise. So, that’s good. Now, I should probably mend like some kind of AoE. I don’t know if I have any yet. Let me see Firestorm this one. Is this a rain? Targeted AoE. Oh, yeah. Yeah, okay, we want that. Level 12 spell. All right, we got a shackle key. All right. Oh. What? Is dwarf? Oh, yeah. I’m I’m KO’ing the dwarf, so we might as well just schwack him down. You can see there we took a huge faction hit there. We got a forging hammer. Uh which could be junk. Oh, we got a slave. Trammel’s, which is a new item, I guess. 22 AC feet. What? What? Oh my god, 28 22 AC feet. All right, jeez. That seems broke, if you ask me. But, uh you know what? How about I do itemization in my own game and not uh complain about this game, right? All right, we got a thermometer right over there. I don’t know what he is, but uh check him out here in a second. Are you uh You’re not a name. He is a necromancer, though. >> [snorts] >> I’m going to go into recovery just to try to get some mana regen going on because uh something I’ve realized is uh it is definitely some uh some pain on some mana regen. All right, we got Oh, okay, we’re going like in some back cave here. Not a whole lot of names. And I mean, I feel like I’m topping out already at uh at 14. Really, I’m getting 0.9 1.4 0.9% experience per kill. Yeah. Slightly better than ball. Uh definitely still feels a little low uh experience-wise like like lower than uh TLP would be. So, it’s definitely uh disappointing to me, but it definitely feels a low. Let me grab this. I didn’t put it on my bars. I’ll put it like right What’s our mana regen right now? Not that great. Come on. Trying to Try not to cast anything we don’t need to, but Like this this is life tap sucks. It’s only 15. The next level we get it like 100 so it’s a little bit better. Now, this build doesn’t really take off until you have all the AAs for uh for uh critical damage, right? And once you have those it starts to really feel better because you’re you’re your focus is like damage and life taps, right? Uh I’ve done something similar to this on the private beta when I leveled up a wizard, but uh I don’t think I made any videos on it, but yeah, I mean it works. I think Shaman would be like the one I would remove from this combo if I’m being an honest in every way. Uh take Bard or something like that instead. All right, we have Taskmaster. All right, he’s coming over here anyway. Nope, he’s not in me. Is there any names in this damn zone? All right, there’s an yellow orc warden and whatever that is ahead of us, so. I don’t know what quest that would be for, but I’m just going to sell it. Definitely some items here that might be like wood elf quests that we wouldn’t be able to do because we are KOS to them, so. I’m I’m I’m assuming these quests are actually pretty good if you do them, but I mean Yeah. This is a interesting zone I have no like I have no nostalgia for, so it’s just like, okay. Uh yeah, I never I never went here when it was like retail, right? Like way back in the day. Uh it it was always trains, trains, trains, and automobiles, right? Like it was terrible. It was a terrible zone then, and it honestly still feels like a terrible zone now. Um compared to Befallen, right? Befallen, you’re like you’re you’re within the door, and you’re already getting some names and stuff like that. All right, we might actually die right here, though. Since we got attacked by four mobs. All right, what we got? A tongue, shoulder pads, junk, junk, and junk. All right, all our stuff. Do I have a heal? Mem’d? That’s the real That’s the real question, right? >> [snorts] >> I can’t tell what heals more. My life tap Uh light healing does a lot more. All right, let’s Let’s do that. There we go. Like I’m I’m being pretty uh pretty lazy about it. But uh you you know, you take your currency, and you use those on the spells you use, right? Which it tunes it. Which it gives us shield of fire, which gives us a damage shield. Pretty nice. Pretty nice. 6.8 damage. Better than nothing, right? Better than nothing at all. Prophet is a little lower level. All right, we got a blue orc head, a sealed note, and a rotting fate arc mask, which is uh nice little face. There we go. I’m going to leave the other junk. I don’t care. I’m about to quest right now. Okay, so that’s all those named. Let’s go over here. All right, we got attacked by another royal guard. I’m not 100% sure where they’re coming from, but >> [snorts] >> we’re going to make our way into the castle here in just a second. I think that’s where we’re going next. All right, we came in here. We went like this. We went over here. We went in there. We went there. Went here. So, that’s what’s left is crossing the bridge here. Now, there was a dude over here called chokehold, I believe. Yeah, this guy. Okay. Now, this is something something to note, right? Like I saw this on my thing. You cannot hit him, apparently. And uh you can only kill him with magic, so I don’t know exactly what’s going on there. I don’t know if that’s by design or what, but make sure you have an ability to uh do that. Sure, let’s go into empower. They said they fixed it, so let’s see what it does now. 107, [snorts] 20 more points of damage, not too much. Yeah, not really worth it. Sealed note. All right, we got this. Armband of serrated teeth, which is uh arms with no AC. Yeah, all right. Let’s just loot it for now. Take a look at it later. Are we still scowls and scowls and scowls? So, it’s probably about 2 hours. Like that’s how long it took me in uh Blackburrow to uh have enough Oh, this one’s actually got a rare creature name tag on it. Took me about 2 hours in Blackburrow to get on KOS to uh the things there, so or to max ally, I guess. So, you know, I would expect, you know, a good 2 hours here at uh you know, a decent pace. All right, we got a deteriorated ancient Faded Arc Longbow, which is a nice little bow. Um that’s not too bad. Let’s leave that. Now I think we can actually put this on, yeah, for Shadow Knight. Uh the dagger that I’m using is not uh usable. It’s a necro dagger, so there we go. Now we’re looking a little dabber with our little uh thing there. All right, so we need to go around this way. Oh my god. All right, so let’s do rain. All right, that should do a little damage and then we project lightning. Not too bad. I mean, they’re down to 32%. So it is what it is. 1% 1.7%. I mean, we’re getting close to level, so that’s not bad. All right, sell that junk. All right, this is the front door. All right, we got attacked by this guy. Come on. Just die so I can move on. Now, if you upgrade these AOEs, which could be an a viable build, right? If you if you level with wizard more than once, right? Upgrading your AOE spells uh will make them better. Yeah, I can’t Uh and having the the stun AOEs is definitely very important for a caster. Plus the the one for getting knocked back and stuff like that. Definitely uh make sure you have those, but I don’t have any of that, so I’m just I’m just raw dogging it here. There we go. One more to go. 83, so we got 1.7 on each of those, which is pretty decent. Let’s go over here to bonfire. He’s a paladin network paladin, all right. Didn’t Didn’t know that was a thing, but all right. I is the only dot I have memorized. That’s a bold choice of bold choice for me only having one dot. But you know, it is what it is. Oh, and he laid hands. I’m going to go into recovery. Because I feel like this fight is going to be prolonged, right? I’m going to re-taint him. I’ll try it again. Nope. One more time. This is from uh the fallen, first mob, right? Um Definitely, I think the Ebon Scythe is better. Yeah. The dep- Ebon Scythe seems better. This one’s a little faster delay, but I mean, I don’t know how much extra damage you’re getting off this. Uh you know, 0.5 versus 0.1. So. That is All right, we got Lord Darnis and a bunch of other things. So, if I pull him Looks like I only got him, so perfect. So, we’re going to do uh firestorm and two project lightning as soon as that’s up. There we go. I need like one more AA AA AA we. I think that would be uh ideal. So, there we go. Level 15. Now, we just finish this guy off. Solar drac. Solar drac. And I want to memorize I want to memorize my new spells in all honesty. That’s where I want to go right now. All right, we got a bandolier of teeth, which is a shoulder, 12 hit points, no AC. Uh It is a downgrade, but we’ll loot it just in case, and it’s battle plans. Sell that. All right, now back here. Or unless they tell uh retail thing we we need to figure out at that point. There we go. This guy is level 20, so he’s like the last mob. We’ve killed everything else, so level 20 is like the highest mob here, I guess. I don’t know. Definitely uh We got it what? We got a level, so I think we started about 20% in. So, we got 80% of a level in 37 minutes with uh no real, you know, issues. So. All right, we got the Crown of Crush, which is 12 AC six strength. Uh it’s not as good as the Shadow Knight helmet from the Fallen. And some raw hide gloves. Uh auto sell. And we’ll just go ahead and loot that. And then we can come up here and look at the land. We own We own We We own it all now. Uh not much else in the zone, I don’t believe. Like um looking at this, like there’s Oh, we do this orc trainer thing. I don’t know. Let’s go see what that is. I got three centurions there. I think 15 is a little high. I mean, we came here 14, right? So, I’m I’m going to say that that’s probably too high for that to start this cell. Right? I don’t feel like it’s too challenging compared to the like spit ball was hard compared to this, but how the hell do I get to this area? I don’t really like this is pretty easy. Doesn’t Doesn’t look like that counted for the hunter. Like if they There’s an orc trainer. Yeah, I killed the warlord and the trainer. Right? Or the warlord and the taskmaster didn’t count. Shiny brass shield, nice. Little shield there. But nothing too too advanced here. So, I think we’re going to wrap. Oh, jeez, we one-shotted that guy. Uh we’re going to wrap this zone up, I think. Where’s the Where’s the castle? Let’s get that in the background here. Oh, we got an AA, so that’s That’s it. All right, so that is Oh, gosh, we’re just going to keep getting the track hacked, right? All right. That is Crushbone, the revamp. Uh we got, you know, some items here like uh with this robe, which is okay. Eight intelligence is better than the shiny metallic robe, probably. Uh from Guk, battle bracer of battle, which I believe that is actually an upgrade for me cuz I’m wearing a raw hide pa- seven AC. Five AC, but I get some strength, so that’s a swap right there. Uh That’s the right one, right? Yeah. Destroy that. So, like if I got that up another rank, it’d be 25 AC shoes. I mean, okay. Uh forging hammer, that’s from Spitpaw. That’s all from Spitpaw. Uh we got this two-handed axe. It’s kind of weak, but it might be nice for, you know, starting until you go to Befallen and get better. Shiny brass shield, which is a nice shield. I think that’s from Spitpaw. That’s from here. And then we got this crown of crush, which uh just as good as the thing from Blackbarrow, right? I mean so it’s definitely a some choice. I think the the key item here is this spiky splint mail for the clicky uh damage shield, right? So I think that’s the the draw for this zone I would say unless there’s something else I’m missing.
